CH 11.1: Sexual Production Requires Meiosis Flashcards
What is a Gamete?half
-Haploid reproductive cell= eggs & sperm
What are Somatic Cells?
-Nonreproduction cells
What is a Zygote?
-Diploid cell=fusion of male & female gametes
When does Meiosis occur?
-During gamete formation= produces cells w/ half the normal number of chromosomes
What 2 things constitute a cycle of reproduction?
-Meiosis & fertilization
What happens to the single diploid Zygote in animals/humans?
-it undergoes mitosis to give rise to the cells in the adult body
What are Germ-Line cells?
-They are cells that are set aside from somatic cells bc they will go through meiosis to produce gametes (occurs during zygote development)
What is the key difference between Somatic Cells & Germ-Line cells?
- Somatic cells undergo mitosis= forms genetically identical diploid daughter cells
- Germ-line cells undergo meiosis= produce diploid gametes
