What are signs of moderate anxiety
Agitation

What are signs of severe anxiety
Inability to function
Ritualistic behavior

What are signs of panic level anxiety
Distorted perception
Loss of rational thought
Immobility
GAD
Generalized anxiety disorder is diagnosed when the client exhibits uncontrollable excessive worry for more than 3 months
Acute stress disorder
Exposure to traumatic event causes numbing, detachment, and amnesia about the event for at least 3 days but not more than 1 month following the event
PTSD is when symptoms last longer than 1 month up to years
What conditions can anxiety be related to
Hyperthyroidism
PE
How long do panic attacks typically last
15-30 min
What are manifestations of GAD
Restlessness Muscle tension Avoidance of stressful activity or events Procastination Seeks repeated reassurance
Modeling
Allows a client to see a demonstration of appropriate behavior in a stressful situation. The goal is the the client will imitate the behavior
Flooding
Involves exposing client to undesirable stimulus in an attempt to turn off the anxiety response
Most useful for client who have phobias
Response prevention
Focuses on preventing the client from performing a compulsive behavior with the intent the anxiety will diminish
What are meds for PTSD and acute stress disorder
SSRI antidepressants such as sertraline ( Zoloft)
Sedative hypnotic anxiolytics such as diazepam (Valium) for short term use
Nonbarbituate anxiolytics such as buspirone ( Buspar)
Other meds include beta blockers and antihistamines to decrease anxiety
Anticonvulsants are used as mood stabilizers
What are signs of mild anxiety
Restlessness
Increased motivation
Irritability
