CF effects- lqc 7b Flashcards
Effect of CF on digestion and absorption of digested food
Thicker, stickier mucus blocks the pancreatic duct.
Pancreatic digestive enzymes cannot leave the pancreas and enter the small intestine. A lower concentration of these enzymes causes less efficient digestion of food, so less products of digestion are absorbed into the blood (malabsorption syndrome). The lack of glucose delivered to body cells for respiration , results in a lack of energy for cell activity, resulting in tiredness.
Effect of CF on pancreas function
Stickier mucus blocks the pancreatic duct, so pancreatic enzymes become trapped in the pancreas, behind the mucus and can damage the pancreas and produce cysts of hard fibrous tissue. If cells that produce the hormone insulin , are damaged, this can result in a form of diabetes .
effect of CF on Male reproductive system
Thicker, stickier mucus blocks the sperm ducts/vas deferens or males may lack these tubes. Sperm cannot leave the testes, which decreases chance of a sperm fertilising an egg and the female becoming pregnant .
effect of CF on Female reproductive system
Thicker, stickier mucus forms a mucus plug which blocks the cervix . This prevents sperm deposited in the vagina reaching the ovum (egg) in the oviduct which reduces the chance of fertilisation and pregnancy.
