Cerebral spinal fluid Flashcards
What produces cerebral spinal fluid
The choroid plexus
What kid of process is CSF production
Active metabolic process
How does CSF production occur
Through Sodium being pumped into the subarachnoid space and water follows from the blood vessels
Where are choir plexus located in the brain
primarily located in the lateral ventricles (temporal horn roofs, and floors of bodies), posterior 3rd ventricle roof, and caudal 4th ventricle roof
What is the pathway of CSF through the ventricles
From lateral ventricles (2 on each side) CSF travels through foramen of monro into the third ventricle then passes through the cerebral aqueduct into the 4th ventricle through either foramina of luschka or single foramen of mangendie
Where does the CSF exit the ventricles
Exits 4th ventricle and flows through subarachnoid place over and around the brain and spinal cord
What is the CSF reabsorbed into
the venous system
where is CSF re-absorbed
arachnoid granulations on venous sinuses
Where is CSF typically absorbed
The superior sagittal sinus
What does arachnoid granulation contains
Arachnoid villi
How do arachnoid vili allow reabsorption
pressure dependant one way valves that open when the intracranial pressure is greater then dural venous sinus pressure
What kind of process is reabsorption
Passive
What does reabsorption depend upon
The pressure gradient between the intracranial space and the venous system
What drives the flow of the CSF
Brain pulsations
