cerebellum Flashcards
Cerebellum definition
Essential for smooth and accurate goal directed movement and balance
Contains the most neurones in the brain
How cerebellum role was discovered
Discovered by cerebellar diseases
Ataxia-lack ability to stand or walk
Ataxia-Lack of voluntary movement
peduncles
connection to brain stem from cerebellum
What is present in the deep cerebellar nuclei
Cerebellar cortical ones contain somatotopic map
Regions of cerebellum
vestibulcerebellum- responsible for balance
Spinocerebellum- communication with spinal chord
cerebrocerebellum- planning movements and motor learning
It inputs and integrates information to create an output
Purkinje fibres
Massive dendrites which release GABA which exerts inhibitory actions on certain neurone and thereby reduces the transmission of nerve impulses.
Granule cells
Granule cells have the most numerous type of neurons in the brain. They are involved in functions ranging from processing visual and motor information to learning and memory.
What causes different firing patterns in Purkinje cells
MF and CF
CF-initial big spike and small bursts used for events
MF-steady stream spikes for magnitude
Basic unit of cerebellum
Called a recurrent loop
Parellel fibres(excitatory) and Golgi(inhibitory) converge in the Purkinje cells
cortex-lateral cerebellum-thalamus
Vestibulocerebellum function
Responsible for eye movement in occurring to head movement
Damage to this causes eyes to flick around
Spinocerebellum
This keeps the posture upright using the spine and measures where we are in space
Feedfoward
Cerebellum is important in feed forward by the process that allows spatial and temporal relationships between events to be recognized
cerebrocerebellar
cerebrocerebellar receives cortical projection and is able to learn and adapt
Glasses experiment is done which bends eye vision so shooting darts is bad but gets better due to adapting
Taking the glasses of starts to go off again
