how does cellulitis present in children & where?
Commonly on arms/legs/face-
Swelling/tenderness
Warm skin
Pain
Bruising
Blisters
Fever
Headache
Chills
Feeling weak
Red streaks
how does cellulitis present in adults?
lymphedema, tight, shiny skin
how does penicillin work?
kills bacteria by disrupting the cell wall
what are adverse effects of penicillin?
Rash
Puritis- (itching)
Nausea
Diarrhea
how do cephalosporins work?
inhibits cell wall synthesis
adverse effects of cephalosporins
Diarrhea
Abdominal pain
Nausea
Fatigue
What are some nursing interventions for cellulitis?
assess- size, color, blisters, drainage, tenderness, temp
outline affected area
avoid shearing
elevate extremity
what can you educate PTs on about cellulitis?
Elevate the extremity
Decrease activity
Always finish antibiotics
Worsening symptoms
how can you prevent cellulitis?
Hygiene
Wash cuts and scrapes
Protective clothing/gear
Pets
Protective footwear
Treating skin conditions
How are adults at risk of cellulitis infection?
all same risk factors for all infections EXCEPT it occurs due to breaks in the skin in unsanitary conditions
contraindications of cephalosporins
PT with hx of serious penicillin allergy
