Cellular respiration Flashcards
Where is insulin produced?
Beta cells of the Islets of Langerhans Pancreas
What is insulins function
Promote glucose uptake into cells (atp production or storage in liver)
Glucagon is produced where?
Alpha cells of Islets of Langerhans Pancreas
Glucagon’s function?
Stimulates the breakdown of glycogen it increase blood sugar levels
What happens if you lose the function of insulin?
no glucose in cells
no atp from glucose
no glycogen stored for harder times
Diabetes Mellitus is
The ability to produce or respond to the hormone insulin is impaired
results on abnormal metabolism of carbs and elevated levels of glucose in the blood
describe Type 1 diabetes
Body does not produce insulin as beta cells of pancreas are destroyed, this is often autoimmune or genetic or through environmental factors
describe Type 2 diabetes
body produces insulin, but receptors are nonfuction (insulin resistant)
can be linked to other pathogies and obesity
