Cells Flashcards
Who discovered cells?
Robert Hooke discovered cells when he looked at a cork under a microscope. (Saw plant cells)
What did Anton von Leeuwenhoek do?
- Created powerful lenses for magnifying images (To see threads - he was a draper)
- He used his lenses to study microscopic life - was the first person to see single celled organisms
What are the 3 rules of The Cell Theory?
- All living organisms are made of one or more cells
- Cells are the basic unit of structure and function in an organism
- Cells can only come from other cells
Who are some contributors to the Cell Theory?
Matthias Schleiden, Theodor Schwann, and Rudolf Virchow
What did Matthias Schleiden contribute to The Cell Theory?
“All plants are composed of cells”
What did Theodor Schwann (Swan) contribute to The Cell Theory?
“All animals are composed of cells”
What did Rudolf Virchow contribute to The Cell Theory?
“All cells come from other cells”
Cells vary in _______ and are the basic ______
Cells vary in size, structure, and function and are the basic unit of life.
What does the shape of a cell correlate with?
The shape of the cell is often related to its function
What size are cells?
Most cells are very small, but they range in size.
Why must cells be small?
Cells are small so that they can be efficient. As a cell grows its volume increases much faster than its surface area. SURFACE AREA NEEDS TO BE BIGGER THAN VOLUME
Why must a cell have a large surface area to volume ratio?
If the cell is too large it’s surface area would not be able to meet the cells needs. It would not be able to maintain homeostasis.
What is homeostasis?
Stable internal environment.
