Cell Transport Flashcards
What is diffusion?
When molecules move from an area from a high concentration to a low concentration.
What is a semi-permeable membrane?
A cell membrane that allows some material through. Not all materials.
What is passive transport? (Calm)
The movement of molecules across the cell membrane without the use of energy.
What are the types of diffusion?
Simple Diffusion and Facilitated Diffusion
What is Simple diffusion?
Molecules go straight through the membrane.
What is Facilitated diffusion?
Molecules move from HIGH to LOW using a protein channel (Tube)
What is Active Transport?
The movement of molecules through the membrane using energy. (ATP)
Goes against the concentration (Goes from low to high)
What is are some examples of Active Transport?
Sodium-Potassium pump and Bulk Transport
What is Bulk transport?
A form of Active Transport that is used when a molecule is too big to go through the membrane.
What is endocytosis? (In)
Large molecules are taken in. (By vesicles)
What is exocytosis? (Exit)
Large molecules are expelled from the cell.
What is Osmosis?
Diffusion of water a HIGH concentration to a LOW concentration. Across a semi permeable membrane.
What is an Isotonic Solution?
no difference in concentration of water between the cell and the environment.
What is a hypotonic solution?
High concentration of water/low solute
Plant cells can’t burst because of their cell wall
Turgor pressure
Preferred state for plants
What is a hypertonic solution?
Higher concentrations of solute/less water
problem: cell loses water
in plants: plasmolysis
in animals: shrinking cell
