Cell organelles Flashcards
What does the Plasma membrane/ cell membrane do?
It covers the cell and controls what goes in and out of the cell
What is the Cytoplasm?
The region of the cytoplasm that include the fluid, cytoskeleton, and all other organelles. It is Jelly-like fluid that fills the cell.
What is DNA?
The genetic material in a cell.
Where can DNA be found?
It can be found floating around in the membrane and the nucleus.
Where are ribosomes made?
Ribosomes are made in the nucleolus.
What do ribosomes do?
Ribosomes make proteins.
What is the endomembrane system?
A system of organelles that are either directly connected to each other, or exchange material through vesicles.\
Which 5 organelles are a part of the endomembrane system?
(Endoplasmic Reticulum, nucleus, Golgi apparatus, lysosome, and vesicles.
What is the Rough ER and what does it do?
The rough ER is dotted with ribosomes. The rough ER specializes on shipping-out proteins.
What does the Smooth ER do?
The smooth ER is responsible for detoxification of harmful substances.
What does the Golgi Apparatus do?
The Golgi apparatus is responsible for processing, packaging, and transporting. (Shipping center)
What do vesicles do?
Vesicles carry material throughout the cell.
What are Lysosomes and what do they do?
Lysosomes are a special type of vesicle. Lysosomes digest material. (Clean up)
What is apoptosis?
Cell suicide
What does the Mitochondria do?
The mitochondria supplies energy to the cell.
