Cell Structure and Diversity Flashcards
Unity in Diversity
Unity found in shared features
* Divergence - similar base structure but adapted to their environments
* Convergence - not having a similar base structure but having similar similar pressures
Common ancestor (unity) but differences due to SPs (Diversity)
How are species named?
genus and name specific to species eg Homo Sapiens
3 Domains of life
Bacteria, Archaea, Eukarya
Subgroups of Eukarya
Plantae, Animalia, Fungi and Protists
Domain Bacteria
most diverse and widespread, multiple kingdoms, mostly rod
Domain Archaea
Can live in extreme conditions, multiple kingdoms, mostly round
Plantae
carries out photosynthesis to produce food, autotrophs
Fungi
absorbs nutrients from other deaad organisms, saprophyte
Animalia
Multicellular Eukaryotes
Protists
Mostly unicellular, some multicellular, some protists more related to P,A and F than other protists
Natural selection
SPs, changes in allele frequency, accumulated changes over time, descent with modifications, selects the best trait for survival
Prototype mammal
Mammal from which all other mammals descended
