Cell Respiration Flashcards
Plant respiration
Take in light E through photo –> makes sugar molecules like glucose –> glucose broken down by mitochondrion to form ATP, energy released by breaking the bonds of sugars –> CO2 released as a low energy molecule
Energy flow
Photosyn and Cell respiration
ATP
Made of 3 phosphate groups, a ribose and Adenine
*Breaking a phospate group from bond releases E to produce ADP. Known amount of E released so can be controlled
Can use E to join back a phosphate to make ATP –> cell res
Why do I need ATP in cells
*To do mechanical work
* To make and break mats
* For transport
* To generally maintain order and prevent entropy
What does Cell respiration do?
Mitochondrion - at matrix at the centre and inner membranes
Use glucose and h2o –> low E CO2 + H2O + E in the form of ATP
Mitochondrion
*1-10 µm long
*1-1000s per cell
* Has their own DNA + ribosomes, can produce some of it’s own proteins but not all
- Has two membranes: inner and outer, both are phospholipid bilayers and intermembrane space between them where the conc. grad is established
Inner membrane has folds with protein complexes and a matrix inside the membrane. Different compartments of mitochondrion have different parts of the cellular respiration.
