Cell Structure Flashcards
Parts of eukaryote and prokaryote cells
Plasma Membrane
Surrounds aqueous environment of the cell
Cytoplasm
all the materials enclosed by the membrane, EXCLUDING the nucleus
Cytosol
the aqueous portion of the cytoplasm without the subcellular structures (just the liquids)
Bacteriophage (or phage)
viruses that infect prokaryotic cells
Prokaryotes
(Bacteria)
don’t have membrane-bounded nucleus, but rather their DNA is stored in a nucleoid region of the cytoplasm
commonly single-celled.
Eukaryotes
(Plants, animals, fungi, protists)
has a nucleus and other complex internal structures
Their nucleus has the chromosomes
Much larger than prokaryotic cells! (1000-fold greater)
Contains an intracellular membrane network that subdivides the interior of the cell
Are prokaryotes and eukaryotes completely different?
They seem to have had a common ancestor 3 billion years ago!
