Cell Signaling Receptors Flashcards
Define: ligand
The signal that binds to the receptor
Define: binding receptors
Binds to specific molecules that stick cells together
Are binding receptors permanent?
Some are, but some are temporary
Define: transport proteins
Gated channels
Define: activator receptors
Cell signaling receptors
What are G proteins?
They bind to GTP or GDP, and are molecular clocks
What do G proteins do?
They convert GTP to GDP slowly using GTPase
What are the two heterotrimeric G proteins?
GEF and GAP
What does GTP break into?
Pi and GDP
What is GEF?
GTP exchange proteins
What is GAP?
GTPase activating proteins
How do heterotrimeric G proteins receptors work?
- Ligand binds
2. GEF cause GDP to fall off and GTP to bind causing it to activate
What happens during a phosphorylation cascade?
Signal amplification happens where one ligand can cause 1 billion response proteins
Define: receptors
Receiving unit for signals that bind to specific molecules based on shape and charge
