cell Membranes Flashcards
Properties of internal cell membrane
Allows movement
Divides organelles different compartments
Isolates contents of organelles
Site of chemical reaction
Site of attachment for enzymes/ribosomes
Substances needed for respiration kept in mitochondrion
Role of plasma membrane
Control movement
Partially permeable membrane
Have antigens for cell recognition
Allows cell to cell attachment
Acts of site of cell communications
Structure of membranes
Phospholipids (hydrophilic head polar)
And (insoluble hydrophobic non polar tail)
Proteins, cholesterol, glycolipids etc
Effect of temperature on membrane structure
Increasing temp increases permeability and fluidity
1. Increases Kinetic energy
2. Denatures proteins so leaves gaps in phospholipids
3.tertiary structure in cell changed and broken h bonds
Effect of solvents on cell membrane structure
Depends on solvents. Organic solvents are less polar than water e.g alcohol so they dissolve membrane and disrupt cells
1. Increases concentration increases permeability
2. Strong solutions destroy cells
3.non polar molecules fit between phospholipids and disrupts it increasing fluidity and permeability
