examples of prokaryotes
bacteria
cyanobacteria
cell surface membrane
forms boundary cells controlling what passes in and out of cells and allowing fluids either side of it to have different compositions
importance of membranes
right conditions for reactions
-chemical reactions
flexible to accomodate
vecsicles
chemical secretions made by cell packaged into membrane bags
main structure of membranes
made mainly of proteins and lipids arranged specificly
lipids in membrane
polar liquids
what are lipid molecules attached to
one end of lipid joined to polar group
what forms polar part of lipid
phosphate group forming phospholipid
unit membrane
with water on each side
phospholipid molecules form bilayer with hydrophillic heads pointing into water while hydrophobic tails stay protected in middle
what effects how the proteins move around in phospholipid bilayer
the amount of unsaturated fatty acids
more fluid membrane is more unsaturated fatty acids
why is simple bilayer not enough
because simple would allow fat soluble organic molecules to pass thought but most chemicals ionic so cant pass through lipids
features of protein in bilayer
have hydrophobic part buried in lipid bilayer and hydrophilic part involved in variety of activities
functions of membrane proteins
help substances move across membranes
