Cell Membrane 2 Flashcards
What do Glycoproteins and Glycolipids do?
They form a protective coat (glycocalyx) and form cell to cell recognition/ interaction
How much water is in the body of a 70kg man?
60% of the body is water, 42 of 70kg is water
What is Adipose tissue made of
90% lipids, majority are triglycerides
Small fraction of water
Females have slightly more
What is Skeletal Muscle made of?
75% water, 18% protein
Definition of osmosis
The movement of water across a membrane in response to a solute concentration gradient
-water moves from a region of low solute to high solute
What are aquaporin channels?
channels of transmembrane proteins that have a hole always open to allow water to pass through
Leak channels
2 Types of extracellular fluid
Interstitial fluid
Plasma
Ions High in Extracellular Fluid
Na+
Cl-
Ca2+
HCO3-
Ions Higher in Extracellular fluid
K+
Anions (HPO4-, H2PO4-)
Proteins
What is Osmotic Pressure
Pressure that would have to be applied to oppose and prevent osmosis
What is osmolarity?
The overall solute concentration of a compartment
-takes into account both penetrating and non-penetrating solutes
What is the normal osmolarity levels of the human body?
280-296 mOsM (around 300 mOsM)
Isosmotic
2 solutions have identical osmolarities (equal)
Hyperosmotic
Describes the solution with the higher osmolarity (greater than)
Hypoosmotic
Describes the solution with the lower osmolarity (less than)
