Cell Histology Flashcards
What is the function and location of an epithelial cell
Skin
Acts as a protective, secretory and absorptive surface.
Regulating movement of substances into and out of the body.
Vary in shape .
Red blood cell function and location?
Bind to oxygen in lungs and carry it to tissues throughout the body where it is exchanged for the waste product c02
Location: bone marrow
White blood cell (leukocytes) function and location?
Identifying, capturing and eliminating invading pathogens or foreign cells.
Location: stored in lymph tissue and blood.
Bone marrow produces them
Bone cell (osteoblasts)
bone producing cells in bone marrow & other connective tissues
Synthesise and secrete collagen fibres and other organic components which are used to build the extracellular matrix of the bone tissue.
Fibroblast function and location?
large, flat, branching support cells present in most connective tissue.
Secrete fibres including collagen and some of the extracellular matrix.
Provide structural framework for tissues
Skin wound healing
Location: multi cellular environment but close to epithelium or endothelium
Skeletal Muscle cell function and location?
Under voluntary control and is able to contract and respond to stimulation.
Location: attached to skeleton via tendons or connective tissue sheet called aponeurosis.
Smooth muscle cell function and location?
Involuntary
e. g. regulate the blood vessel diameter
location: found in walls of internal organs, blood vessels and internal muscles of eye.
nerve cell function and location?
Sensitive to external stimuli and allows them to respond and communicate information through chemical and electrical signals
Location: CNS AND PNS
Sperm cell function and location?
Location: testes
Uniquely designed for inheritance and passes on genetic info
Enabled to travel and fertilise an ovum
Ovum function and location?
Location: ovaries
Ocyte travels to uterine tube until it encounters a sperm cell- causing fertilisation.
