Cell Division Flashcards
Cell Continuity
The way in which cells give rise to new cells as a result of division.
Haploid
1 set of chromosomes.
Diploid
2 sets of chromosomes.
Cell cycle
Events in the life of a cell.
Interphase
When the cell is not dividing.
Cell activities in interphase
Protein synthesis/ DNA replication/ respiration/ photosynthesis.
Mitosis
Nuclear division in which a nucleus forms 2 nuclei containing identical sets of chromosomes.
Prophase
Nuclear membrane breaks down/chromatic condenses/chromosomes become double stranded/ spindle forms.
Metaphase
Chromosomes along the equator/ Spindle attaches to chromosomes.
Anaphase
Chromosomes pulled apart/ spindle fibre contracts
Telophase in animals
Cleavage furrow
Telophase in plants
Cell plate
Function of mitosis in single celled organism
Reproduction
Function of mitosis in multi celled organism
Growth/Repair.
Cancer
A group of disorders in which cells lose control of the rate of mitosis and the number of times mitosis takes place.
Causes of cancer
Cigarette smoke, radiation, UV light, pesticides.
Meiosis
Nuclear division in which the daughter nuclei contain half the number of chromosomes of the parent nucleus.
