Cartilage Flashcards
What is cartilage (the tissue) and what cells are found within? What do the cells do?
connective tissue
- weaker than bone but flexible
Cells: chondroblasts and chondrocytes
Chondroblast: blast/produce matrix
Chondrocytes: mature chondroblasts surrounded by matrix (are in lacunae)
What are the functions of cartilage? Exp of how carilage is found in respiratory system?
support soft tissues
- in trachea which keeps it stable
- gliding at articulations (where bones meet)
What are the two types of growth patterns in cartilage?
Interstitial growth and appositional growth
In cartilage growth, what is interstitial growth?
Where is the “new” carilage formed?
Interstitial growth is basically the growing of the matrix. How does this happen? When 2 chondroblasts become a chondrocyte within a lacunae. They work together to make more matrix which is a larger piece of carilage
The new cartilage is on the inside
What is appositional growth in cartilage growth? What are the terms associated?
So this is just like interstitial growth but instead of new cartilage inside, new cartilage is formed outside. So the adding of chondroblasts to periphery (outside)
Terms;
Perichondreim (peri- around, chondrium- carilage)
