Cardiovascular Conditions Flashcards
What would cyanosis suggest?
- Poor Circulation (e.g. peripheral vasoconstriction secondary to hypovolaemia)
- Inadequate oxygenation (right-to-left cardiac shunting)
What are the cardiovascular causes of shortness of breath indicate?
- Congestive heart failure
2. Pericarditis
What are the respiratory diseases associated with shortness of breath?
- Pneumonia
2. Pulmonary embolism
What would pale skin suggest?
- underlying anaemia (e.g. haemorrhage, chronic disease
2. poor perfusion (e.g. congestive cardiac failure)
What is malar flush associated with?
mitral stenosis
What would oedema in a cardiovascular exam suggest?
congestive heart failure
What would pallor in the hands suggest?
- poor peripheral perfusion (congestive heart failure)
2. cyanosis (underlying hypoxaemia)
What would tar staining suggest?
smoking related: coronary artery disease, hypertension
What would xanthomata suggest?
hyperlipididaemia (typically familial hypercholesterolaemia)
Why is hyperlipidaemia important?
risk factor for coronary artery disease + hypertension
What would Arachnodactyly (‘spider fingers’) suggest?
Marfan’s syndrome
What is marfan’s syndrome associated with?
- mitral/aortic valve prolapse
2. aortic dissection
What is finger clubbing associated with in cardiovascular exam?
- congenital cyanotic heart disease
- infective endocarditis
- atrial myxoma
What signs in the hands are associated with infective endocarditis?
- Splinter haemorrhages
- Janeway lesions
- Osler’s nodes
What would cool hands suggest?
poor peripheral perfusion (congestive heart failure + acute coronary syndrome)
What would cool and sweaty/clammy hands suggest?
acute coronary syndrome
What would a CRT greater than 2 seconds suggest?
poor peripheral perfusion (e.g. hypovolaemia + congestive heart failure)
What could cause bradycardia (<60bpm)?
- healthy athletic individuals
- atrioventricular block
- medications
- sick sinus syndrome
What could cause tachycardia? (>100bpm)
- anxiety
- supraventricular tachycardia
- hypovolaemia
- hyperthyroidism
What is an irregular rhythm most commonly caused by?
atrial fibrillation
What are other causes of irregular rhythm?
- ectopic beats in healthy individuals
2. atrioventricular blocks
What are causes of radio-radial delay?
- Subclavian artery stenosis (e.g. compression by a cervical rib)
- Aortic dissection
- Aortic coarctation
What are causes of a collapsing pulse?
- normal physiological states (e.g. fever, pregnancy)
- cardiac lesions (e.g. aortic regurgitation, patent ductus arteriosus)
- high output states (e.g. anaemia, arteriovenous fistula, thyrotoxicosis)
