Cardiovascular Flashcards
Transient ischemia leads to a ….. of the tissue.
Dysfunction
What is an infarction?
Permanent tissue damage from a persistent ischemia of the tissue.
What is tissue necrosis?
Tissue death.
What is the difference in a circulatory system and a tidal system? Give an example of each.
Circulatory - flow is one way and so it must form from a system of loops. Eg cardiovascular system.
Tidal - flow is two ways, a surge in one direction followed by a surge in the opposite direction and so the system can use the same vessels for both directions. Eg respiratory system.
What is cardiovascular disease?
Dysfunction of a part of the cardiovascular system.
What two classifications are used for cardiovascular diseases that refers to when the disease becomes present?
Congenital - present at birth.
Acquired - develops after birth.
What is heart failure?
When the heart cannot pump enough blood around the body to fulfil its need, as a result of a dysfunction of the heart.
What is cardiac arrhythmia?
Abnormal heart rhythms.
What is an edema? How can it come about with regards to cardiovascular disease treatments?
Accumulation of excess fluid in body tissues (essentially waterlogging). Incorrect fluid therapy used in treating decreases in blood plasma volume.
Which anaesthetics depress the pumping ability of the heart directly?
Barbiturates.
What is ischemia?
Inadequate blood flow to a tissue.
