Cardiac Pathology Flashcards
What is hypertension?
High blood pressure, over 130/85mmHg
Left ventricle hypertrophy is caused by what?
An increase in afterload pressure, muscle gets bigger
What is the first-line treatment for hypertension?
Diet and exercise
Beta blockers and Ca2+ channel blockers are prescribed to treat what?
Hypertension
What do beta blockers do?
Decrease cardiac output, decrease sympathetic effects on cardiac muscle cells
Where do beta blockers act?
Cardiac muscle cells
Where do Ca2+ channel blockers act?
Smooth muscle
How do Ca2+ channel blockers promote vasodilation of arteries?
Decrease Ca2+ entry into the smooth muscle
What is the base cause of primary hypertension?
Increased TPR due to decreased artery radius
What ejection fraction is indicative of heart failure?
Under 40%
What are the two types of dysfunctions in heart failure?
Diastolic and systolic
What is heart failure?
Blood pressure is too high for the heart to pump out enough blood
What is diastolic heart failure caused by?
Thickening of the ventricle wall, less room for filling
Why does the ventricle wall thicken in diastolic heart failure?
Muscle growth associated with increased blood pressure
What is systolic heart failure caused by?
Damage to heart from previous heart attack
