Carbohydrates and Lipids Flashcards
What is a monomer?
A small repeating unit or molecule from which polymers are made
What is a polymer?
A large molecule made up from many repeating monomers
What is the monomer of a carbohydrate called?
Monosaccharide
What is the monomer and polymer of a protein called?
- Amino Acid
- Polypeptide
Why are lipids/triglycerides not considered polymers?
They are not made up of repeating units
What is a condensation reaction?
When 2 molecules join together to form a chemical bond with oxygen produced as a product
What is a Hydrolysis reaction?
The breaking of a chemical bond between 2 molecules using a molecule of water
Which 2 monosaccharides combine to produce Maltose?
Glucose and Glucose
Which 2 monosaccharides combine to form Sucrose?
Glucose and Fructose
Which 2 monosaccharides combine to form Lactose?
Glucose and Galactose
What is a glycosidic bond?
A bond formed by condensation reaction joining together 2 molecules in a carbohydrate
Where is Beta Glucose found?
Only in Cellulose
What is the purpose of cellulose?
Provides rigidity and strength to plant cell walls
What are the 2 different forms of starch?
- Amylose
- Amylopectin
What is the purpose of starch?
Stores glucose in plants for respiration
What type of glucose makes up starch?
Alpha Glucose
What is the structure of Amylase?
Unbranched, coiled, compact
What is the structure of Amylopectin?
Branched to provide more ends for rapid hydrolysis
What is the purpose of Glycogen?
Stores glucose in animals for respiration
What glucose makes up Glycogen?
Alpha Glucose
What is the structure of a triglyceride?
- A Glycerol
- 3 Fatty Acids
What bonds join together a triglyceride?
- 3 Esters
What is the difference between a saturated and unsaturated fatty acid?
- On the Carbon chains of a unsaturated fatty acids there are carbon double bonds
- On a saturated fatty acids there are no C=C and there is the maximum amount of hydrogen molecules
What are some functions of triglycerides?
- Energy source for aerobic respiration
- Thermal Insulation
- Electrical Insulation (Myelin Sheath)
- Buoyancy
- Physical protection around organs
What is the structure of a phospholipid?
- 2 Fatty Acids
- A Glycerol Molecule
- A Hydrophilic phosphate group
Where are phospholipids mainly found?
Cell membranes
What is the purpose of cholesterol?
Changes the fluidity of the membrane.
The more cholesterol the less fluid the cell membrane becomes
