Calcium Chloride MOA:
-Increases intracellular calcium levels
-Increases myocardial contractility
Calcium Chloride Indications:
-Acute hypocalcemia
-Calcium channel blocker overdose
-Beta Blocker overdose
-Hyperkalemia
Calcium Chloride Contraindication:
None in emergency setting
Calcium Chloride S/E:
-Extravasation may cause tissue necrosis
-Syncope
-Asystole
-Bradycardia
-Dysrhythmias
-Nausea/vomiting
Calcium Chloride Routes:
IV
IO
Calcium Chloride Onset:
1-3 min
Calcium Chloride Adult Dosages:
500-1,000 mg (0.5-1.0 Gm); may repeat dosage in 10 min
Calcium Chloride PEDS Dosages:
0.2-0.25 mL/kg of a 10% solution
Sodium Bicarbonate Class:
Alkalizing agent
Sodium Bicarbonate Standard Supply:
Prefilled syringe
Sodium Bicarbonate MOA:
-Buffers excess acid (H+)
-Increases the pH
Sodium Bicarbonate Indications:
-Metabolic acidosis in these conditions:
o Salicylate overdose
o Tricyclic antidepressant
overdose
o Hyperkalemia
o Pre-existing/known
metabolic acidosis
o Acidosis refractory to
effective ventilation
o Prolonged cardiac arrest
Sodium Bicarbonate Contraindications:
None in emergency setting
