Calcium Channel Blockers (CCBs) Flashcards
1
Q
Calcium Channel Blockers (CCBs)
A
Prevent hypertension by preventing calcium from entering the cells of heart and arteries by vasodilation. This lowers blood pressure and makes it easier for the heart to push out blood
2
Q
Common medications of CCBs
A
- Dihyropyridines
- amlodipine
3
Q
What medications end in INE?
A
CCBs
4
Q
The therapeutic action of CCBs
A
Smooth muscle vasodilation and relaxation
5
Q
Indications for CCBs
A
Hypertension
6
Q
What population are CCBs best used for?
A
African Americans
7
Q
Contraindications of CCBs
A
- Hepatic impairment (first pass metabolism = more free drug = toxic)
- Acute myocardial infarction (heart attack)
- Coronary artery disease
8
Q
Side effects of CCBs
A
- Flushing
- Headache
- Dizziness
- Ankle edema
- Bradycardia
9
Q
Adverse effects of CCBs
A
- Orthostatic hypotension
- Bradycardia
- Chest pain
- Dyspnea
10
Q
Nursing interventions for CCBs
A
- Monitor for peripheral vasodilation -> keep the feet above heart level to bring the blood back to the heart & reduce edema
- Assess BP & HR prior to administering
- Obtain baseline weight
11
Q
Patient education for CCBs
A
- Inform patient about the effects of peripheral vasodilation
- Educate patient on ways to decrease effects of dizziness (Stay hydrated, rise slowly)
- Refrain from grapefruit juice (Increases levels of medication in the blood -> can become toxic)
