C9 Organic Chemistry Flashcards
What is a hydrocarbon?
Something only containing hudrogen and carbon
What is an alkane?
A hydrocarbon that contains 1 CC bonds
It is satuated with carbin
More runny
Less viscous
More volitle
Easier to light
What are the products of a hydrocarnpbon’s complete combustion in oxygen?
Carbon dioxide
Water
Is cude oil renewbale or nonrenewable?
It is a fossile fuel and is non renewabke
What is crude oil?
A mix of differnet hudrocarbons
How does factional distilation work?
The bottom is heated up and vaporised hyrdrocarbons are put in it. The hydrocarbons rise and as they start to meet there boiling points they condense at different levels and are extracted.
This seperates the hydrocarbons into differnet mixtures with similar chain lengths
What is cracking?
The solitting of a longer chain hydrocarbin which is in high sulply by low demand into a shorter chain hyrdocarbon with a low suply but hih demand
What is the test for an alkene?
Bromine water will turn bright orange to a coulerless solition as it binds to the alkene
What type of reaction is cracking?
Thermal decomposition
Give the two ways of cracking?
Vaporise the hydrocarbons, then a cataylist (aluminium oxide). This speeds up the reaction and they split apart
Or you can use steam crakcing. You valorise hydrocarbkns and then mix them with steam
