C7 Energy Changes Flashcards
Why can’t energy be created or destroyed?
Because of the conservation of energy
In a chemical reaction what do we know has happened?
Energy has been transfered
What is an exothermic reaction?
A reaction where energy is given out to it’s surroundings (nearly always heat)
Give an example of an exothermic reaction?
Burning fuels (combustion)
Many oxidation reactions are exothermic as well has neutralising reactions
What are exothermic reactions used for today?
Hand warmers
Self heating cups (hot chocolate..)
Explain hamd warmers??
?
What is an endothermic reaction?
A reaction which takes in energy
Usualy heat with a fall in temprature
Are the majority of reactions exothermic or endothermic?
Exothermic
Give an example of an endothermic reaction?
Photosynsis
Thermal decompesition
What is a common use of endothermic reactions today?
Sports injury pacts (cool packs)
Explain cool packs??
?
What is activation energy?
The minimum enegy needed to start an reaction by causing particles to collide with each other and react
Describe an exothermic graph?
The reactant has a little increase in enegy which is the actibation energy and then drops down and releases energy
Using a graph what gives you the amount of energy lost or gained?
The difference in hight from the reactant to the product shows how much energy is lost or gained
Describe an endothermic graph?
The reactant starts increasing and then drops off a bit but overall the product energy is higher than the initial energy.
