C11 The Earth's Atmosphere Flashcards
Phase 1 of the start of the atmposhpere?
Volcanoes errupt puting gasses into the atmosphere
Mostly co2 and no Oxygen
Small amout od oxygen, nitrogen and ammonia
What is phases two of the composition of the atmosphere?
Water vapour condenses to form oceans
Co2 is absorbed by the oceans
Green plants and algea disolve into the ocean - which start to produce oxygen from photosynis
What is phase 3 of the composition of the atmosphere?
As algea photosynisised pxygen increases and co2 decreased
As oxygen built up more complex life started to form
When was the atomosphere alike now?
200 million years ago
When did algea first evolve?
About 2.7 billion years ago
What is the greenhouse effect?
Short waves come through the atmospher
Long waves bounce back from the ground
Long waves are reflected back by the atmoshpere
The atomspher warms up
How does human actions increase global warming?
Deforestation
Burning fossile fuels
Agriculture
Creating waste
Why is evidence about global warming reliable?
It has been peer assesed
Why can’t we fully understand climate change?
There are too many varibales that are changing
Why is climate change dangerous?
Melting poler ice leads to rising sea levels
Changes climate patters
More extreame weather
May lead to a loss of biodiversity as habitats are destroyed
What is a carbon footrint?
A measure of how much co2 id released over the full life cycle of something
Why is measuring carbon footprints hard?
There are too many factors to measure
Eg how your actions have effected other people to do things ect
How could you reduce your carbon footprint?
Using more renewable/ efficent energy/products - this would conserve energy and reduce waste
Governemt laws can reduce emmisions eg ULEZ
Why is it hard to reduce your carbin footprint?
It may be more expensive
You may nit be bothered
Governemnts may be conserned by limiting economic growth with new laws
Of pther countries arn’t doing it then the UK may not want to fall behind
People get a customed to lavish lifestyles
