Name some features that a group has?
- Interaction between group members
- A collective identity
- Shared objectives or a common goal
- Communication
Explain collective identity?
- A team can be recognised easily as they are wearing the same uniform/ colour.
- This develops affiliation which creates motivation and a belonging.
Define Task Cohesion?
Results and Outcome based.
Define Social Cohesion?
Focused on working together and interaction.
Explain Tuckmans group formation model?
Broken into 4 parts;
Forming; getting to know each other, strengths/ weaknesses, will people fit in, develop social relationships,reliant on the coach to bring the group together, figure out the goal.
Storming; infighting and conflict as people establish roles/ positions, confrontation with leaders.
Norming; cooperation, conflicts are resolved, the team begins to unify and cooperate focussing on achieving goals, motivation and success rise.
Performing; common goals, success, team support each other and understand their roles, motivation and enjoyment is high, respect for other members and leaders is high.
Explain why cohesive teams tend to be more successful?
- Success is possible only if there is good task cohesion as the team will be working together towards a common goal.
- Therefore the team will work together effectively concentrating on the task/goal rather than personal disputes.
- Compared to social cohesion which helps the team support each other.
- Often success improves the overall cohesion of a team leading to further success.
