Fiedler’s Theory of Leadership, states that there is not one best style of leadership. In order to best match leaders with situations, each leader must first understand their natural leadership style.
Autocratic (task orientated); Most favourable, Clear task, Group get on/support, Strong leader, Respect for leader, High levels of motivation, High ability, Leader has good relationship with group.
Democratic (person orientated); Moderately favourable, Need for consultation, Some support, Some harmony and clarity, Time to discuss, Motivation is moderate, Group has reasonable ability.
Autocratic (task orientated); Least favourable, Unclear/dangerous task, Hostile/large group, Weak leader, Little respect for leader, Low ability/novices, Low motivation, Need quick decisions.
Laissez-Faire; Time available, Experienced performers, Autonomous learners, High motivation, No danger.
Explain Chelladurai’s Multi Dimensional Model of Leadership?
The leader should use an interactive approach to balance the situation, the leader and the group.
- Situation; individual sports may need a more democratic/laissez-faire leadership style
- A complex task may need a more autocratic style
- Group; lots of numbers may dictate a different style of leadership
Chelladurai suggested that three factors affect leadership;
- Situation; affected by; time available, type of task, danger
- Group; group can be affected by; group size, group ability, age and gender
- Leader; can be affected by; leader characteristics, experience, preference
Name the 3 types of Leadership Behaviour?
Leadership behaviour is different styles for different sporting situations.
The 3 types are;
- Required behaviour; what the situation demands
- Preferred behaviour; how the group wants the leader to behave
- Actual behaviour; how the leader decides to act in relation to leadership style
