Define Anxiety?
A negative aspect of stress characterised by irrational thinking, loss of concentration and fear of failure.
What are the two types of anxiety and explain them?
Competitive trait (a disposition to suffer nerves in most sporting situations, personality trait).
Competitive state (Anxiety experienced strong specific time during a competitive situation).
Define somatic anxiety?
Similar to an inverted U diagram. The symptoms include, psychological responses, muscular tension, poor coordination, sweating, increased heart rate.
Define cognitive anxiety?
Negative linear. Symptoms include psychological responses, irrational thinking, worrying, confusion and loss of concentration.
What are the causes of anxiety?
Being watched Running out of time when losing Letting the team down Playing badly Increased competition Injury
What is the SCAT (Sports Competition Anxiety Test)?
A questionnaire used by sports psychologists to measure anxiety (Martens 1977).
- You complete an hour before and it tests Somatic Anxiety, Cognitive Anxiety and Confidence.
What are three ways of measuring anxiety?
Questionnaires
Observation
Physiological measures
What are advantages to measuring anxiety using questionnaires?
- Efficient, quick, Cheap
- Deals with lots of info
- Allows easy comparison

What are disadvantages to measuring anxiety using questionnaires?
- Biased answers
- Misunderstand/ leading questions
- Depends on mood
- Subjective

- Behaviour change when watched
- Subjective
- Know the performer
- May need more than 1 observer
Explain physiological measures to measure anxiety?
Measure the physical response from the body.
What are advantages of physiological measures?
- Objective
- Specific
- Factual
- Can be measured in real life situations
What are disadvantages of physiological measures?
- May cause stress when measured
- May need training to use the equipment
- Expensive equipment
- Device may restrict performance
