What does BEDTOP stand for?
Social Facilitation/Inhibition is the behavioural effects due to others present.
Define Social Facilitation?
Positive Effects due to the presence of others.
Define Social Inhibition?
Negative Effects due to the presence of others.
Explain the Zajonc Model (1965)?
According to Zajonc, there are four types of others present in sport:
1) An audience – just watches
2) Competitors – are in conflict with the performer
3) Social reinforcers – encourage or criticise performance
4) Co-actors – are doing the sport alongside you
Define Evaluation Apprehension?
The perceived fear of being judged.
Name some situations where evaluation apprehension may be worse?
- The audience is known to us
- The audience is critical
- The audience contains eg Chief Scouts
- We are lacking confidence
Name some ways of preventing Social Inhibition?
- Getting players familiar with playing in front of a crowd.
- Improving focus and concentration.
- Lower arousal levels
- Decrease the importance of an event
- Peer support groups
Define the dominant response?
Focusing on one or two cues as our ability to take in information reduces.
