Medullary cavity is lined with endosteum, filled with red bone marrow in children or yellow bone marrow in adults.
What covers the diaphysis and what is it?
Peruosteum is a dense fibrous membrane
What is spongy bone and where is it found?
AKA cancellous bone, it’s light and porous and is found in the ends of long bones and in the middle of most other bones. It’s always surrounded by compact bone.
What is compact bone and where is it found?
It’s dense and solid, forms long bones and the outer surface of other bones.
What makes the lattice work of cancellous bone?
Trabeculae
What is the structure of compact bone?
Lamellae, lacuna, canaliculi, volkmanns canals
What covers the epiphysis and what are its functions?
Articular cartilage, it secrets lubrication to ease movement of bone within a joint
What is osteoblasts?
The process of building bone
What are osteoclasts?
The process of breaking bone down
What are osteocytes?
Mature bone cells embedded within bones
