What is the cutaneous membrane and what are there layers called and made of?
AKA skin. Consists of the epidermis which is the outer layer, made of stratified squamous epithelial, and the dermis which is the inner deeper layer, made of connective tissue.
What is the hypodermis, what’s it made of, and it’s function?
The layer beneath the cutaneous membrane, made of areolar tissue and connective tissue. It binds the cutaneous membrane to the underlying tissues.
What is the cycle of a new cell
Stratum basal is the innermost layer, made of columnar stem cells which continuously undergo mitosis to produce new skin cells that are pushed upwards.
Cells stop dividing as their pushed up and start producing keratin. The cells flatten and die because they’re moving away from blood supply.
As they reach the stratum corneum (outermost layer) all that’s left is the keratin and are now called keratinocytes, they replace dead cells and eventually flake away.
What is the difference between eccrine and apocrine glands?
Eccrine: cooling of body by producing sweat
Apocrine: stimulated by stress and serial excitement
