C5.3.1 - Reversible Reactions Flashcards
What is a reveresible reaction?
A reaction where the products can react together to reform the original reactants
State an example of a reversible reaction.
Copper(II) sulfate and water
Describe a hydrated copper(II) sulfate ion.
Blue, charge = +2, CuSO4.5H2O, surrounded by five water molecules
Describe an anhydrous copper(II) sulfate ion.
White, CuSO4, contains no water
When blue hydrated copper(II) sulfate decomposes, is it an exothermic or endothermic reaction?
Endothermic
What is equilibrium?
When the rates of the forward and backward reactions are the same
What are the features of an equilibrium reaction?
The concentrations of all reacting substances and products remain constant, and the forward and backward reactions continue to happen
What is a dynamic equilibrium?
A reaction where the forward and backward reactions are occuring at equilibrium
Can substances enter or leave in a closed system?
No
