C4.1.1 - Group 1 (The Alkali Metals) Flashcards
Where are Group 1 metals in the Periodic table?
The vertical column on the left of the Periodic Table
What is the name given to the Group 1 metals?
The alkali metals
Why are the Group 1 metals known as the alkali metals?
They react with water to form alkaline solutions
Describe the properties of the alkali metals.
Good conductors of electricity
Shiny
Soft enough to cut through
What state are the alkali metals at room temperature?
Solid
Describe the trends in the Group 1 metals.
They get softer as you go down
Their melting point decreases as you go down
They become denser as you go down
The reactivity with water increases as you go down
Name all of the Group 1 metals.
Lithium Sodium Potassium Rubidium Caesium Francium
Why are the Group 1 metals stored in oil?
If not, they will react quickly with the oxygen
Why do the Group 1 elements have similar chemical properties?
They all have one electron in their outer shell
What happens to the electron in the Group 1 outer shell during a reaction?
It gets lost, forming an empty shell and forming ions with a positive charge
