C4.1.5 - The Transition Metals Flashcards
Where are the transition metals on the Periodic Table?
Between Groups 2 and 3 (Between IUPAC Groups 3 and 12)
What are the properties of the transition metals?
Shiny when freshly cut
Good conductors of electricity
Strong
Malleable
What does malleable mean?
Can be bent or hammered into shape
What is the difference between the alkali metals or the transition metals?
Transition metals are stronger and harder
Transition metals have higher densities
Transition metals have a higher melting point (except mercury)
Transition metals are less reactive
What is the only transition metal which is not solid at room temperature?
Mercury
Why are transition metals useful for making everyday objects?
They have good properties
What does iron react with to produce rust?
Water and oxygen
What elements do not react with oxygen or water at all?
Gold, Platinum, Iridium
What elements are used in catalytic converters?
Platinum, Rhodium, Palladium
What do catalytic converters do?
They convert harmful gases in vehicle exhaust fumes into less harmful ones
