C5.1.5 - Titrations Flashcards
What is a titration?
An experiment to see how much alkali/acid is needed to change pH of the other
Describe how you would perform a titration.
You add a bit of alkali to the conical flask. Then, add a few drops of universal indicator to the alkali. Then, slowly add acid to the alkali slowly using a burette. When the alkali is neutralised and the indicator changes colour, stop adding acid.
Describe how you could make a titration experiment more accurate.
Use a volumetric pipette instead of a measuring cylinder as it is more accurate
Clamp the burette vertically for more accurate readings
What is a titre?
The difference between the initial burette reading and the final burette reading (amount of acid used)
What are concordat titres?
Titres that are within 0.1cm^3 of each other
How do you calculate a mean titre?
Add the 2 concordant titres and divide by 2
What might you do to obtain a repeatable titre?
Swirl the flask during the titration to mix the contents
Do a rough run first to roughly check where the titre will be
What is the meniscus?
The curve seen at the top of a liquid in response to its container
