C5.1.2 - Percentage Yield and Atom Economy Flashcards
What is the actual yield?
The mass of the product that you actually make in a reaction
What is the percentage yield?
The amount of mass you actually make compared to the maximum mass you could make
What is the equation for percentage yield?
(Actual yield / theoretical yield) * 100
Why might the percentage yield be less than 100%?
The reaction may not go to completion
The reactants may react in a different way than expected
You may lose some product when you remove it from the reaction mixture and purify it
What is the atom economy of a reaction?
The amount of atoms in the reactants which form the desired products compared to how many atoms there are in the reactant
What is the equation for atom economy?
(Formula mass of desired product / formula mass of all products) * 100
