C1.2 Cell respiration Flashcards
What is cell respiration?
The controlled release of energy from glucose to produce ATP.
What is ATP?
Adenosine triphosphate, the energy currency of the cell, used for cellular processes.
What are the two types of respiration called?
Anaerobic and aerobic respiration.
Where does aerobic respiration occur?
In the mitochondria.
What is the word equation for aerobic respiration?
Glucose + oxygen —-> Carbon dioxide + water + ATP
What is the symbol equation for aerobic respiration?
C₆H₁₂O₆+6O₂——–>6CO₂+6H₂O+ATP
Which type of respiration is more efficient?
Aerobic respiration, because it produces 36-38 ATP per glucose while anaerobic respiration only produces 2 ATP per glucose.
Where does anaerobic respiration occur?
In the cytoplasm.
What is the word equation for anaerobic respiration in animals?
Glucose ——-> Lactic acid + ATP
What is the word equation for anaerobic respiration in yeast and plants (fermentation)?
Glucose —–> Ethanol + CO₂+ATP
What are some of the energy requiring processes that respiration provides ATP for?
Muscle contraction, active transport, cell division, synthesis of macromolecules.
