B1.2 Proteins Flashcards
What are proteins?
Large biological molecules made of amino acids, essential for structure and function in cells
Which elements does protein contain?
Carbon, hydrogen, oxygen, nitrogen, sometimes sulfur
What are the functions of proteins?
H-hormones
E- enzymes
I- immunity
S- structural
T- transport
What do enzymes do?
Speed up reactions
What’s an example of an enzyme?
Amylase
How do proteins help structure?
Collagen in skin and bones
How do proteins help transport?
Haemoglobin in the blood.
How do proteins relate to hormones?
Insulin for blood sugar regulation
How does protein help immunity?
Antibodies
What is an amino acid?
Building blocks of proteins
What do peptide bonds do?
Link amino acids together
What are dipeptides?
Two amino acids joined
What is a polypeptide?
A long chain of amino acids
How many levels of structure do proteins have?
Four
What is the primary structure of a protein?
Sequence of amino acids in a polypeptide chain.
What is the secondary structure of a protein?
Folding into alpha helices or beta-pleated sheets due to hydrogen bonding.
What is the tertiary structure of a protein?
3D folding based on interactions between R groups
What do the r groups in proteins do?
Determines function
What is the quaternary structure of a protein?
Multiple polypeptides joined together
What is an example of the quaternary structure of a protein?
Haemoglobin
What is denaturation of a protein?
When the protein loses its shape and function due to heat or pH changes
What is an example of protein denaturation?
Cooking an egg (heat denatures the proteins turning it solid)
What are the two types of proteins?
Fibrous and globular proteins
What is the shape of a fibrous protein?
Long and thin
What is the shape of a globular protein?
Spherical
Which protein is soluble, fibrous or globular?
Globular
What is the function of a fibrous protein?
Structural
What is the function of a globular protein?
Metabolic
What are some examples of fibrous proteins?
Collagen, keratin
What are some examples of globular proteins?
Haemoglobin, insulin
