A2.3 Viruses Flashcards
What are viruses?
Non-living infectious particles that require a host cell to reproduce
What genetic material is in the structure of a virus?
DNA or RNA
What is the protein coat of a virus called?
Capsid
What is the role of the capsid?
To protect genetic material
What structural features do some viruses have but not all?
An envelope
What is the envelope of a virus made out of?
Lipids
Can viruses reproduce on their own?
No
What do viruses need to do in order to reproduce?
Infect a host cell
How does the virus infect a host cell?
By attaching to a cell, injecting genetic material and then taking over the host’s machinery to make new viruses
What are three examples of viruses?
Influenza, Covid-19, HIV
What could happen once a host cell is infected with a virus?
The virus could destroy the host cells and spread quickly
Do antibiotics work to get rid off viruses?
No, antibiotics only work on bacteria
What can help to prevent viral infections?
Vaccines
What can help to slow down viral replication?
Antiviral drugs
