1) THEORETICAL APPROACHES TO GENDER ROLES IN THE FAMILY *
Functionalism - Parsons
Functionalist, Parsons = Expressive & Instrumental role
1) Feminism - Oakley (liberal)
Feminist, Oakley = women are housewives, look after emotional needs. Marxist and radical feminists say gender roles represent patriarchal nature in traditional families. Dark side of the family = domestic violence and child abuse

Women perform unpaid labour therefore benefiting capitalism.
1) Young & Willmott (1973) - Symmetrical family
1) Conjugal roles are joint
2) The family is nuclear
3) The family is privatised - husband & wife spend time alone together.

Giddens
Stacey - Pms argue that we have more freedom and choice
Giddens - No longer need to accept male dominance. Men more willing to interact emotianally.
2) THE DOMESTIC DIVISION OF LABOUR:
Domestic tasks
2012 BSA survey
Domestic tasks are gendered, men = DIY tasks, women = cooking, cleaning, looking after children.
Dual Burden = working full time but also doing housework and childcare
2012 BSA survey - men spend an average of 8 hours a week doing domestic work whereas women spend 13 hours.
2) Dunscombe & Marsden - “Emotion work”
The triple shift - Women carry out paid work, go home to housework and also have to undertake emotional work for the husband.
2) Gershuny - Lagged adaptation
Women’s role have changed more quickly than men’s.
2) Hakim (2010) - fair share of work between men and women
“On average men and women across Europe do the same total number of productive work hours, once paid jobs and unpaid household work are added together.
3) ISSUE OF POWER
Decision making - Hardhill et al
Hardhill et al - Important decisions in the family typically made my men. Acknowledges the minority where there is a degree of equality.
3) Family practices - Charles and Kerrs’
Interviews showed women cooked meals suited to their husbands likes and dislikes, showing a sense of control and power in nuclear families.
3) Family finances & money management - Pahl
Pahl - Growing individualisation in couples’ finances. Men and women likely to have own bank accounts and take responsibility for paying for different things.
