Childhood - “Social construction”?
Childhood is not seen as a period of innocence, dependence or vulnerability in all cultures.
Childhood - Study - Postman (1982) - emergence and disappearance of childhood
Emerged through the spread of literacy, allowing adults to protect children. However spread of media has led to a decline in childhood.
Youth?
Young people experience; rebellion, growing up and a period of fun and excitement.

All young people are at the same point of life
Experience the same youth culture
Learning and negotiating their pathway into adulthood

Youth subcultures based on resisting the norm.
Clarke argued they were rebelling against their low status within society.
Youth, change?
Since ww2 youth has been recognised as its own category in life. With business’ targeting specifically towards them.

Mass media condemn and demonise the youth more than they praise them.

The “storm and stress” is culturally specific and not found in all cultures.
Middle age?
Stage of development between young adulthood and old age.

Becoming close to the age which they may be considered old.

Type of car, Hobbies, Clothes shops, Holiday destinations
Health issues, Quality of life

Middle aged people are running the country and hold power at work.
Old age?
