River basin shape and geology
The catchment of the river Tweed consists of a horse-shoe shaped rim (circular, flashier rising limb on hydrograph) of hills composed of older, harder rocks which surround a relatively flat basin of younger rocks covered with a thick layer of glacial boulder clay (impermeable, water can runoff).
Land use: fishing
Major fishing along the whole river sometimes causes dangerous decreases in fish, requiring fishing limits from Feb to June.
Land use: urbanisation
Various urban areas along the way, such as Berwick on Tweed, Peebles. Impermeable surface means more runoff, so more discharge
Impact of heavy rainfall
High level of precipitation 1 week in 1948, causing the most significant flood event. Disruption to transport services by collapsing a local railway bridge. About 180 people evacuated.
