C - Reproduction Flashcards
What are the two different types of reproduction…
- Sexual reproduction
* Asexual reproduction
What is sexual reproduction?
Involves the fusion of MALE AND FEMALE GAMETES. Because there are TWO parents, the offspring contains A MIXTURE OF THEIR PARENTS’ GENES.
How many chromosomes does the sperm cell contain?
How many chromosomes does the egg cell contain?
They both contain 23 chromosomes each. Therefore the offspring has the mother and fathers genes
What is fertilisation?
When the egg and the sperm cell fuse together
What does the offspring/fertilised egg contain in terms of chromosomes?
23 chromosomes from the mother and 23 chromosomes from the father
What is Asexual reproduction?
When theres only ONE parent. There’s NO fusion of gametes, NO mixing of chromosomes and NO Genetic variation between the parent and the offspring.
In Asexual reproduction the offspring are ______ of their parents because their DNA is the same.
Clones
How do the cells replicate themselves in animals and humans?
- The cell with the normal full sets of chromosomes
- Each chromosome splits down the middle to form two identical sets of half chromosomes and a membrane forms around them
- The DNA then replicates itself to form two identical cells with complete sets of chromosomes
- This is how we grow and produce REPLACEMENT CELLS
Some organisms produce offspring using Asexual production, give an example of one…
Plants, bacteria, sea horses
