C - Energy Transfer And Decay Flashcards
1
Q
What is the source of energy for nearly all life on Earth?
A
The sun
2
Q
Green plants and algae use a small percentage of light energy from the sun to make food during ______________
A
Photosynthesis
3
Q
The energy stored from photosynthesis in plants is then passed through the ____________
A
Food chain
4
Q
Name two ways that energy is lost from a food chain?
A
As heat
As waste
5
Q
Explain why you hardly ever get food chains with more than about 5 levels
A
Because so much energy is lost that there’s not enough energy to support any more organisms after
6
Q
Energy is transferred through each member of the food chain, but a lot of it is _____ too
A
Lost
7
Q
Explain the process of decay…
A
- Plants take in elements from the soil that then get passed through the food chain.
- These get returned to the environment in waste products produced by the organisms, or when they die.
- These materials decay because they are broken down by microorganisms
- They are put back into the soil creating a constant cycle of decay
8
Q
Describe how a compost bin works…
A
- People put their kitchen waste e.g. Food peelings in a compost bin.
- The compost is decayed by microorganisms quickly as its warm and moist
- It can then be used as fertiliser and recycles the nutrients back into the soil - giving you a lovely garden!
