C - Homeostasis Flashcards
What does homeostasis mean?
All the functions of your body which try to maintain a “Constant internal environment”
To keep all your cells working properly, 4 certain things in the body need to be kept at the right level, what are they?
- Ion content
- Water content
- Sugar content
- Temperature
Ion content is regulated by the _____
Kidneys
Explain how ions enter the body and what happens to them once inside?
Ions are taken in by FOOD and then absorbed into the blood.
What will the kidneys do if you eat something containing too many ions (e.g salt)?
It will remove the excess ions from the blood and it will then go in your urine
Some ions are lost in your _______ (That’s why it tastes salty!)
Sweat
Name the 3 main ways that water is lost from the body?
- Through the skin as sweat
- Via the lungs in breath
- Via the kidneys as urine
Body temperature is controlled by the _____
Brain
All enzymes work best at a certain temperature, and so the body tries to remain at this temperature. What is the temperature?
37°c
How is the body temperature controlled by the brain?
Part of the brain acts as your own personal THERMOSTAT which is sensitive to the temperature in the brain and receives messages from the skin telling it what temperature it is.
Blood sugar (glucose) is regulated by _______
A hormone called insulin which maintains the right level of glucose in your blood so your cells get a constant supply of energy
On a cold day, or when you’re not exercising, you don’t need to sweat so you’ll produce LESS or MORE urine? Will it be more pale and diluted or more concentrated?
MORE
PALE AND DILUTED
Because no water has been lost in sweat etc
