What are the first five steps to BVM Ventilation?
1st- Take or verbalize appropriate body substance isolation precautions
2nd- Check for responsiveness
3rd- Check for breathing
4th- Request for additional EMS assistance
5th- Check for pulse for at least 5, but no more that 10 seconds
After being informed that “You palpate a weak carotid pulse at a rate of 60”, what step should then be taken?
Open the airway properly
You are now informed that “the mouth is full of secretions and vomitus”, what step should now be taken?
1st- prepare the rigid suction catheter
2nd- Turn on power to suction device or retrieve manual suction device
3rd- Insert rigid suction catheter without applying suction
4th- Suction the mouth and oropharynx
You are now informed that the “Mouth and oropharynx are clear.” What step should be taken next?
Open the airway manually, and insert the oropharyngeal airway
You are now informed that “no gag reflex is present and the patient accepts the airway adjunct.” What step should now be taken?
1st- Ventilate the patient immediately using a BVM device
Can also be used with oxygen
You are now informed that ventilation is being properly performed without difficulty. What is the next step that should be taken?
1st- REcheck the pulse for at least 5 but no more than 10 seconds
2nd- Attach the BVM assembly mask to oxygen at 15L/minute
3rd- Ventilate the patient adequately, being sure to make the chest rise at a rate of 10-12 per minute
